Knockhatch Adventure Park Celebrates Grand Opening of Ring-tailed Lemur Enclosure

Hailsham, East Sussex 13th August 2024 – Knockhatch Adventure Park today unveiled its stunning new ring-tailed lemur enclosure, officially opened by the Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex. The event marked a significant milestone for the park, showcasing its commitment to wildlife conservation and further expanding it’s open air enclosures in the Jungle Kingdom Zoo. The ribbon cutting took place under a unique lemur inspired black and white balloon arch provided by Sweethearts Party Boutique in Hailsham.

The state-of-the-art enclosure offers a stimulating environment for the park’s beloved ring-tailed lemur family. The troop recently gave birth to extremely rare twin lemurs. Guests can now enjoy a closer look at these fascinating primates as they swing across the ropes and sun worship on the roof of their Cessna airplane in their open air enclosure.

“The walkways in the Lemur Enclosure are our made from our specialist weave, Fast Rope, which are used by British Special Forces to exit helicopters. ” said Emma Donovan, of Marlow Ropes. "We are thrilled to work in partnership with another Sussex business and help this endangered species thrive.”

Knockhatch also invited Mortain Place, Eastbourne, to have their own lemur experience and to test the accessibility of new enclosure. Resident Bernard Ransom said "we have done a lot with Knockhatch and felt very privileged to be invited to the opening of the new lemur enclosure”. Doreen Ramscar added “the lemurs love sweet potato, he came on my lap and ate loads, so friendly!”

Ben Anderson, Zoo Manager, said ‘The ring tailed lemurs will provide us with a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate our commitment in educating our visitors in the plight the Madagascan ecosystem as well as ensuring ring tailed lemur numbers increase. Since their arrival 5 infants have been born at Knockhatch.

The grand opening was a resounding success, with the Mayor of Hailsham, Polegate and Eastbourne and the Chair & Vice Chair of Wealden Council District Counsel enjoying a variety of activities including informative talks from the Knockhacth team and the opportunity to learn more about lemur conservation efforts.
